Defining Philosophy II: The Six horismoi of Ammonius’ Introduction to His Commentary on Porphyry’s Isagoge (In Isag. 6.25–9.24 B.)
Keywords:
Ammonius, Aristotle, philosophy, definitionAbstract
Building on the earlier exploration of the opening of Ammonius’ commentary on the Isagoge, the study explores the definitions of philosophy introduced in the proem. Their sequence, grouping and eventual overlapping are employed to demonstrate the philosopher’s control over his exposition, but also to hint at the all-encompassing nature of the philosophical wisdom, which through embracing all that is remains the most distinguished even if less-than-clear road to perfection (and thus, godhood).
